Ønsket blev til et krav, og en kommission blev nedsat til at finde ud af, hvilke elementer på Christiansborg, der talte for hvad.Vilhelm la Cour (1883-1974) var dansk forfatter og historiker. Under anden verdenskrig talte han så højt imod besættelsesmagten, at han blev afskediget fra sit embede som lektor på Birkerød Statsskole og måtte syv måneder i fængsel, før han flygtede til Sverige i 1944. Vilhelm la Cour nåede at udgive over 30 bøger i løbet af sit liv og var endvidere Kommandør af Dannebrog.

Mr. Piet Herman Doedens (Utrecht 1942), strafpleiter met gedwongen rust als gevolg van een hersenbloeding, was volgens veel van zijn confrères in zijn hoogtijdagen de beste in zijn vak. Doedens maakte furore met zijn optreden in de zogenoemde ‘paskamermoord’, verdedigde drugsbarons en fraudeurs en bracht zijn tegenstanders met zijn onorthodoxe werkwijze soms tot wanhoop. Auteur Cees Koring brengt in deze biografie Doedens weer terug voor het voetlicht met niet eerder vertelde feiten uit zijn leven. Koring interviewde ook mensen die met fameuze pleiter in de rechtszaal te maken kregen, zoals Fred Teeven en drugsdealer Cees H. Beiden vertellen in dit boek voor het eerst over de deal die zij sloten. Dit leidde tot het politieke schandaal dat bekend werd als de ‘bonnetjesaffaire.’ Cees Koring werkte bijna 40 jaar bij dagblad De Telegraaf, waarvan de helft als misdaadverslaggever. Van zijn hand verschenen honderden artikelen die landelijk en ook internationaal aandacht trokken, zoals de kindermoorden van Michel Stocks, de Zaanse paskamermoord en de ontvoeringen van Gerrit Jan Heijn en Maup Caransa. Het werk van Koring was in vele opzichten riskant. De journalist werd in 1990 in zijn woning in Amsterdam door criminelen overvallen en zwaar mishandeld.

Na de Japanse aanval op Pearl Harbor in December 1941 belanden 120.000 Amerikaanse burgers van Japanse komaf achter prikkeldraad. Officieel zijn ze geïnterneerd uit vrees dat ze weleens konden gaan spioneren voor de Japanse regering om een eventuele invasie van de VS mogelijk te maken. Maar eigenlijk is het puur racisme. Vooroordelen en rassentheorieën liggen ook ten grondslag aan andere, gruwelijke misdaden. De nazi’s roeien groepen uit die ze als untermenschen zien. In 1862 bezocht Abraham Lincoln het legerkamp van de Unie bij Sharpsburg in Maryland, VS. Twee jaar eerder was hij verkozen tot de 16e president van het land, en nu was het oorlog. Het conflict tussen de Noordelijke en Zuidelijke Staten over het recht om slaven te houden broeide al langer en was na zijn aantreden in een burgeroorlog ontaard. Het Zuiden scheidde zich af terwijl het Noorden het gezag van de Unie probeerde te hand haven. De burgeroorlog was maar een van de vele beproevingen van de jonge natie. Lincoln greep liever niet naar de wapens, maar een democratische republiek kon niet toestaan dat een minderheid in opstand kwam. Het Zuiden moest op zijn plaats worden gezet. De bevrijding van de slaven was dan ook niet vanaf het begin van de oorlog het hoofddoel. Maar in zijn Gettysburg Address in 1863 zei Lincoln dat iedereen gelijk geschapen is, zoals het staat in de Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring. Dat betekende ongeacht huidskleur.
