Maijasstiina on tottunut tyontekoon, niin kuin muutkin kylalaiset. Elama on ollut ankaraa, mutta kaikesta on selvitty. Maijasstiinan elo on jo ehtoopuolella, mutta minkalaisia mahdollisuuksia kyla mahtaa tarjota nuoremmille sukupolville? Veres vanhaa veikeampi - maalailuja Savon mailta on leikkaus eraaseen savolaiseen pitajaan ja sen elavaisten asukkaiden arkeen.-

Eletään 1920-lukua Aunuksen Karjalassa, Venäjän puolella. Arhippa on nuori poika, jonka isä on ollut sotimassa yli neljä vuotta. Nyt Arhipan perhe on kuin tulisilla hiilillä. Saapuuko isä tänään vihdoin kotiin? Välillä perhe on ollut epävarma siitä, onko isä enää edes elossa. Kun isä sitten vihdoin palaa, perhe on onnesta soikeana. Ehkä perheen koettelemukset ovat vihdoin ohi. Pian karjalaisten asema Venäjällä kuitenkin heikkenee. Perhe on jälleen hankalassa tilanteessa, ja Arhipan on otettava ohjat käsiinsä. Onko heillä muuta vaihtoehtoa kuin hakea suojaa Suomen puolelta?Kirjailija Mikko Samulinen (1933–1983) julkaisi niin sota-aiheisia romaaneja kuin myös lastenkirjallisuutta.
