Linda, en ung, rodløs kvinder, kæmper for at finde sin plads i tilværelsen. Written by a young Jane Austen, 'Frederic and Elfrida' is a short story that beautifully showcases Austen as the original queen of wit.Penned at around the age of twelve, this is one of the earliest examples of her work ever to have been discovered. Austen’s purpose was to entertain, and here, she certainly succeeded. A melodramatic story of two cousins who are to be wed and the theatrics of family, this story is perfect if you're looking for a lighthearted and funny read. This is an unpolished story from the mind of a girl destined to become one of the greatest female authors of all time and a wonderful example of the flare that Jane Austen had for storytelling.Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most beloved British writers of all time. During her short life, she published six novels: ´Sense and Sensibility´, ´Pride and Prejudice´, ´Mansfield Park´, ´Emma´, ´Northanger Abbey´ and ´Persuasion´, which are all considered literary classics today. Her writing is full of sharp observations on the society in which she lived, as well as ripe with timeless irony, and a solid dose of humour. She has created immortal characters that have inspired countless authors, novels, and movies such as 'Bridget Jones' and 'Clueless'.The most notable adaptation is Joe Wright's 2005 'Pride and Prejudice', starring Keira Knightley ('Pirates of the Caribbean') and Matthew Macfadyen ('Succession').

'The Professor' by Charlotte Brontë has all this and more.'The Professor' is Charlotte Brontë’s first novel, which was rejected several times, and eventually published after her death. Greatly autobiographical, it follows the life of young teacher, William Crimsworth, and his personal and professional life, romantic relationships, and teaching career at a school for girls. The young man’s life is riddled with adventures and misfortunes, mirroring Charlotte’s own troubles while studying and later teaching in Brussels. With handsome rich men and ladies of leisure fluttering their eyelids trying to catch their attention, 'The Three Sisters' reads like a humorous trial run for 'Pride and Prejudice'.Told via correspondence, this is in fact a tale of a single man, Mr. Watts, who is in possession of a good fortune and is in want of a wife. Mrs. Stanhope is the mother of a family of girls who is very much in want of a son-in-law. And the girls? Despite one of them being "the happiest creature on the planet", they aren’t actually all that happy at all. This satirical narrative of courtship and self-interest by the young Jane Austen is a must for any fan of the modern Chick-Lit novel or Rom-Com film.As an extra treat, this edition includes four additional writings from Jane Austen, making this essential reading for any Austen fan or study. 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' - that's the essence of Voltaire's 'Candide'. For, like the ever-upbeat character in 'Monty Python's Life of Brian', the eponymous Candide is taught that everything is for the best. The young Frenchman must not grumble, grimace or lose heart. However, when he is cast out for falling for the daughter of a Baron, his sunny disposition is sorely tested by global disasters including earthquakes, the Inquisition and syphilis.'Candide' was initially banned because of blasphemy and political sedition. But the satire has since become one of the great novels in European history.Voltaire is the pen name of the French writer Francois-Marie Arouet (1694-1778). He was a writer and philosopher whose radical anti-Catholic and pro-freedom work helped inspire the French Revolution a decade after his death. He wrote 20,000-plus letters and 2,000 books and pamphlets and famously spent two years in exile in England for his seditious views. Among his many works, Voltaire was known for 'Lettres Philosophique' and 'Candide'.

‘When you are more intimately acquainted with my Alice, you will not be surprised, Lucy, to see the dear creature drink a little too much; for such things happen every day. She has many rare and charming qualities, but sobriety is not one of them.’Decidedly strange, illogical and out of the norm, "Jack and Alice" depicts life in Pammydiddle, a pleasant English town with a love of parties, scandal and gossip. The work is full of parody and a pastiche of many literary trends of the time. Another classic short story from Austen's "juvenilia", written in her teenage years and originally shared with her family and friends. Full of bold, ridiculous characters and the satire she would later be famed for, it is the perfect insight into the quick-witted mind of young Austen.Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most beloved British writers of all time. She has created immortal characters that have inspired countless authors, novels, and movies such as Bridget Jones and Clueless. The most notable adaptation is Joe Wright's 2005 Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession).

"I cannot imagine," said Sir Godfrey to his Lady, "why we continue in such deplorable Lodgings as these, in a paltry Market-town, while we have 3 good houses of our own situated in some of the finest parts of England, and perfectly ready to receive us!"Another classic short story from Austen's "juvenilia", written in her teenage years and originally shared with her family and friends. Quick-witted, fun and full of the satire she would later be famed for, it is the perfect insight into the mind of young AustenAuthor Robert Rodi enjoyed this story so much that he expanded the short piece into a full-length novel in the mature Austen style.Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most beloved British writers of all time. "We count by changes and events within us. Not by years." Set in a small village, which stands on the site of a historic skirmish, "The Battle of Life" follows the romantic trials and tribulations of two sisters, Grace and Marion. All the while, they are harangued by their father, Dr Jeddler, who seems to treat life as a joke. With love triangles, false elopements and noble sacrifices, this novella explores the idea that each person must face their own, personal battle and decide whether to resolve it with or without incurring casualties. Despite the themes, this love story is peppered with humour and optimism.Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. He is the author of 15 novels, five novellas, and hundreds of short stories. Among his most famous works are 'Oliver Twist' (1839), 'A Christmas Carol' (1843), and 'Great Expectations' (1861). Tess is little more than an English farm girl when she meets the man who will change her life: Angel Clare. It has been adapted for the stage and screen many times, including the hugely popular BBC series written by David Nicholls and starring Gemma Arterton and Eddie Redmayne.Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was an English writer of poetry, novels, and short stories. He belonged to the Victorian realist tradition and was influenced by the writings of Romanticism. His novels strongly criticise Victorian society for constraining individuals in regard to marriage, education, and religion: shunning happiness in the name of social propriety. Hardy’s works explore themes of love, class, and poverty with a painstaking devotion to realism. His best-known works include ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’, ‘The Mayor of Casterbridge’, ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’, and ‘Jude the Obscure’.
