Egli è infatti attivo, fin da giovane, nel fronte repubblicano, finendo più volte vittima della censura monarchica e cadendo anche in un’imboscata quasi fatale. Grande estimatore di Miguel Cervantes, Ibáñez si contraddistingue per una prosa energica, che dà ai suoi molti lavori, fra romanzi, racconti e reportage di viaggio, una solida fama anche a livello internazionale. Alcune sue opere, come "Sangue e arena" e "I quattro cavalieri dell’Apocalisse", vedranno anche delle trasposizioni cinematografiche.
