En lille kystby i Nordeuropa bliver så let som ingenting besat af en fremmed magt. Alle byens indbyggere forstår, at der ikke er noget at stille op mod den mægtige hær, der er underlagt oberst Lansers kommando. Lanser har gjort tjeneste under mange krige, og selvom han ikke møder direkte modstand blandt byens beboere, ved han inderst inde godt, at intet folk formår at forblive fredeligt og medgørligt, når dets frihed er blevet taget fra det med magt.John Steinbecks roman "Månen er skjult" udkom i 1942 i USA, og i løbet af krigen var der mange oversættelser af den i omløb i det besatte Europa. Selvom den invaderende magt aldrig bliver nævnt ved navn, er det tydeligt, at der er tale om Nazityskland, der ligesom oberst Lansers hær formåede at besætte mange europæiske lande uden at møde væbnet modstand, men som ligesom Lanser fandt ud af, at selv de fredeligste folk før eller siden vil slå igen mod overmagten.John Steinbeck (1902-1968) var en amerikansk forfatter, der skrev et væld af noveller og romaner, der er blevet oversat til flere forskellige sprog. I 1962 modtog John Steinbeck Nobelprisen, og hans værker er bredt anerkendte verden over.

Der er skrevet et utal af bøger om livet i Danmark under besættelsen. Den danske handelsflådes rolle op til og under besættelsen er en mindre belyst, men mindst lige så relevant del af danmarkshistorien. En stor del af de danske søfolk, der tilbragte krigen uden for deres fædreland, gik nemlig i engelsk og amerikansk tjeneste og var på den måde med til at vinde krigen, så deres hjemland kunne blive befriet. Han var den første doktor inden for humaniora på RUC, hvor han arbejdede, frem til han gik på pension i 1996. Foruden virket som historiker og forfatter var Christian Tortzen formand for sin lokale afdeling af Danmarks Naturfredningsforening.

Efter at have kæmpet i Anden verdenskrig og studeret på universitetet i Birmingham vendte McGivern tilbage til USA og blev kriminalreporter for Philadelphia Bulletin, hvor han fandt inspiration til sit virke som krimiforfatter. Mange af McGiverns romaner er blevet filmatiseret i løbet af 1950’erne.

Da Danmark den 9. april 1940 blev besat af nazisterne, blev den danske handelsflåde delt i to. Den tredjedel af søfolkene, der lå i dansk havn, måtte blive og hjælpe med at transportere Danmarks forsyninger, men i al hemmelighed gjorde de også en indsats mod besættelsesmagten. De sidste to tredjedele af handelsflåden gik i engelsk og senere også i amerikansk tjeneste for at hjælpe i krigen mod Tyskland og Japan.Christian Tortzen beretter om de danske sømænds rolle under anden verdenskrig og om de følger, de fik for krigens gang og for de enkelte sømænd, der efter krigens afslutning vendte hjem med ar på sjælen.Christian Georg Tortzen (1925-2012) var dansk historiker og forfatter. I 1982 modtog han den filosofiske doktorgrad for værket "Søfolk og skibe under Anden Verdenskrig" og blev dermed RUC's første doktor inden for humaniora. Tortzen har skrevet adskillige bøger om søfartshistorie og anden verdenskrig.
