En af det tyvende århundredes mest folkekære komponister deler her ud af sine erindringer. Kai Rosenbergs livshistorie begynder omkring år 1900, da han er barn i Nordsjælland. Senere hører vi om årene op til første verdenskrig, sådan som de opleves af en stor dreng, og vi får efterfølgende lov til at komme med den voksne Kai om bag kulisserne på nogle af landets mest anerkendte teatre. Blindgadens Boldklub begynder egentlig bare med at en håndfuld drenge giver sig til at spille med en kludebold på vejen foran deres hjem på Østerbro. Men efter ingeniør Mailand begynder at træne drengene, viser det sig, at de er rigtig gode fodboldspillere. Et par af dem er endda så gode, at de måske kunne komme på drengelandsholdet. Problemet er bare, at de bliver nødt til at spille i en rigtig fodboldklub for at komme i betragtning.
