Verk hans eru talin hafa haft áhrif á íslenska rithöfunda sem síðar komu, til dæmis Gunnar Gunnarsson og Halldór Laxness. Jóhann lést árið 1945 og þó hann hafi aldrei átt afturkvæmt til Íslands leit hann alltaf á sig sem Íslending, enda er ýmislegt íslenskt að finna í verkum hans.
