Regitze Barner blev født som adelig, men hendes hjerte bankede for dårligt stillede kvinder.Dette er første bind af hendes samlede erindringer om et langt og begivenhedsrigt liv, der udkom første gang i 1911. Barners forældre blev skilt, da hun var en lille pige, og hun boede på skift hos sine forældre. Da hun var meget ung, fik hun en religiøs vækkelse og begyndte herefter at beskæftige sig med velgørenhedsarbejde. Han er især kendt for sine historiske romaner – blandt andet en række romaner om danske kongers elskerinder i serien ”Danske dronninger uden trone”, som hans bror, Carl Ewald, der også var forfatter, havde påbegyndt før sin død.

Han blev student fra Østre Borgerdyd skole i København i 1864 og uddannede sig efterfølgende til jurist. Efter sine skoleår drog Bloch på en dannelsesrejse sammen med H.C. Andersen, der førte ham til Tyskland, Østrig og Italien. Efter hjemvendelsen blev han udnævnt til sceneinstruktør ved Det Kongelige Teater i København og blev i 1889 slået til Ridder af Dannebrog. Han var bror til maleren Carl Bloch.
