Da den nye madam Bendsen ankommer til den grønlandske koloni, må hun hurtigt vænne sig til en ny hverdag og en helt ny måde at leve på.I ”Fra det Grønland, som gik” skildrer Signe Rink i romanform livet i en grønlandsk koloni i 1830’erne. Bogen udkom første gang i 1902.Signe Rink (1836-1909) var dansk forfatter og etnolog. Hun blev født i Grønland af danske forældre, der fungerede som kolonibestyrere i Nuuk og Paamiut. Som fjortenårig blev hun sendt til Danmark for at uddanne sig og under sit ophold i København mødte hun geologen og grønlandsfareren Hinrich Rink. Sammen flyttede de tilbage til Grønland, hvor de blandt andet var med til at grundlægge landets første avis. Da Hinrichs helbred begyndte at svigte, tog de tilbage til Danmark og senere Oslo, hvorfra Signe nedfældede sine oplevelser fra Grønland. Hun talte flydende grønlandsk og skrev en lang række artikler og bøger om inuitterne og den danske koloni. Hun oversatte desuden grønlandske bøger til dansk og engelsk, og i dag anses hun for at være den første kvinde til at skrive om grønlandsk sprog og kultur.

Fra il 1847 e il 1853 dà alle stampe i suoi capolavori (Jane Eyre, Shirley, e Villette), per poi assecondare il volere paterno e sposare il reverendo Nicholls (1854). Muore poco dopo, a causa di complicazioni legate alla prima gravidanza.

Nonostante la laurea in legge – conseguita al ritorno in Inghilterra – Haggard coltiva da sempre il sogno di scrivere. Spronato anche dalla lettura de “L’isola del tesoro” di R.L. Stevenson, scrive e pubblica i primi racconti, ottenendo tuttavia un grande successo solo col suo primo romanzo “Le miniere di re Salomone” (1885). Considerato l’iniziatore di un vero e proprio genere, incentrato sulla ricerca di misteriosi “mondi perduti” nel bel mezzo dell’Africa, Haggard pubblicherà, da allora in poi, un numero sterminato di romanzi, fra i quali è doveroso citare “La figlia dell’uragano” (1913), “Il dio mostro” (1924) e, soprattutto, la tetralogia del Ciclo di Ayesha.
