Verhalen over momenten van existentieel inzicht‘Bleke levens’ verzamelt het werk op de korte baan van Frans Coenen. Titels als ‘Bleke levens’, ‘Twijfelmoedig’ en ‘Vervreemd’ geven al aan dat Coenen gevoel had voor melancholie en existentiële twijfel. De spanning in deze verhalen zit ‘m in de clash tussen de hoofdfiguren, die een ontluisterende visie op het leven hebben, en hun omgeving, die holle woorden en oppervlakkig optimisme in stelling brengen. Maar de clash kan ook in één personage plaatsvinden: een pijnlijk moment van inzicht, zoals in ‘Zomermiddag’. Het boek sluit af met het ietsje lichtere ‘In België’, een reisverslag dat ons naar Luik, Saint Hubert en Bouillon brengt.Frans Coenen (1866-1936) promoveerde in de rechtsgeleerdheid, werkte als journalist en vond ten slotte zijn draai als gewaardeerd schrijver van romans. Coenen had aanleg voor depressie, wat zich in zijn werk vertaalt in een sterke melancholie. In de eerste tien jaar van zijn carrière publiceerde hij hoofdzakelijk naturalistische romans (‘Zondagsrust’ en ‘Verveling' behoren tot de beste), maar vanaf 1905 verlegde hij de focus naar politiek activisme. Pas kort voor zijn dood keerde hij terug naar fictie, met ‘Onpersoonlijke herinneringen’.
