He was believed to be a homosexual and met a lot of resistance in his life on that account. He died in Paris at the age of 46.

Puck of Pook's Hill is a children's book by Rudyard Kipling, published in 1906, containing a series of short stories set in different periods of history. The stories are all told to two children living near Pevensey by people magically plucked out of history by Puck.

In some ways, `Through the Looking-glass and What Alice Found There‘ (1871) has had an even bigger impact on today‘s popular culture than the first book.Lewis Caroll, pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (1832-1898), was a British mathematician, photographer, and children‘s book author. The idea for his most famous work, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', came to Carroll when he was on a boat with friends, having to entertain three young girls, one of whose name was Alice. Despite his success as a children‘s book author, Carroll considered himself, first and foremost, a man of science and mathematics.

Old Rose and Silver is a novel by Myrtle Reed first published in 1909. The novel follows the lives of Rose and her widowed Aunt, Madame Francesca Bernard, along with young visitor and cousin Isabel, whose lives are changed by the return of an old friend and neighbour Colonel Kent, and his grown son, Allison. Other characters that help shape their lives in significant ways are the Crosby twins, unconventional and uninhibited youths that set society at naught, and an unconventional doctor who specializes in the impossible. Through the limited 'wide scope' descriptions the reader is not sure of the historical setting or even in which decade it's set, but it helps to understand the focus of the story; after all it's about their own little world, and how their own hearts and lives fit together in the tight confines of their town, their garden, their friendships and lives.

When Squire Vane receives some exotic trees from Africa, they quickly become the target of local superstition. Squire Vane is not the type of person to believe in anything supernatural and angrily dismisses their theories. But when a group of outside visitors develops an interest in the story, Vane decides to prove everyone wrong once and for all by doing what everyone is afraid of: going down to the trees at night. In the morning, he has disappeared without a trace.Reminiscent of the work of Henry James, ‘The Trees of Pride’ (1922) is extremely well-written and absorbing – a page turner of a mystery that ultimately leads to a crucial and fascinating philosophical point. Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the most prolific English writers of all time. He wrote poems, plays, essays, newspaper columns, and is especially known for his fictional priest detective Father Brown. His "frenemy", the author of Pygmalion, George Bernard Shaw, famously called him "a man of colossal genius" and the two of them would often engage in friendly public discussions with people like H.G. Wells and Clarence Darrow. Chesterton died in his home, and his last known words were a greeting to his wife, author Frances Blogg.
